RAF Wittering
Main Runway & AGL Refurbishment
Value: £35 million
Client: Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO)
Location: Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure successfully delivered the refurbishment of the main runway and Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) at RAF Wittering. This project was undertaken as part of the Airfield Operating Surfaces (AOS) Framework for Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). The AOS Framework is a programmatic approach to improve the whole-life management of critical airfield infrastructure assets across the UK defence estate.
The refurbishment involved large‑scale reconstruction and resurfacing works across runways, taxiways and associated operating surfaces. With 90,000 tonnes of asphalt and 6,000 m³ of PQC concrete required, early logistical planning was essential. As part of our self‑delivery model, we established on‑site asphalt and concrete batching plants to ensure reliability of materials supply, programme certainty and reduced vehicle movements around active airfield zones.
Our team collaborated closely with RAF Wittering to identify construction areas that would allow flying operations to continue safely throughout. Early phasing workshops enabled us to shift operations from the main runway to the northern taxiway, providing the RAF with a fully completed and operational surface before progressing to subsequent phases.
RAF representatives praised Lagan’s flexibility and bespoke approach, noting that our team tailored the programme around RAF Wittering’s unique operational needs.
